The Friction of Water
|  Experimental Documentary | 00:06:18 | 2026
A poetic & experimental documentary that visually and materially tells the story of the creation of the Earth and its people through the beauty and chaos of water.

Waters of the beginning, filmed through 8mm and then tinted/dyed blue and green. The people, and their families and their everyday life around water are shots from the Philippines through my mother turned into a Cyanotype animation. I recorded rehearsal Bruckner organ music from a catholic church for the overall sound track. To work with a tangible process such as developing b/w reversal 8mm and Cyanotype (which both also require a lot of water to work with) deviates itself from the experience of “intangible” pixels and into *texture*.

To capture from a distance, a distant land, and to touch the distant land.

I am Elea van Es, a Moving Image artist currently studying at the AKI ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands. My practice unfolds at the intersection of video/visual poetry, photography, and installation, where I explore themes of displacement, friendship, and stillness.

Currently, delving deeper into camera-less image-making methods, and Expanded Cinema as a way to work more with my hands and interact with the frame.
